US Senator Chris Murphy has been hospitalised after suffering a stroke, his chief of staff told Politico on Sunday, adding that the Connecticut Democrat was responding well to treatment and was expected to make a full recovery.Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a stroke, before he was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring, chief of staff Allison Herwitt said in a statement, as reported by Politico.“He is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Herwitt said, adding that doctors were encouraged by his progress. The 52-year-old senator had been travelling across the country to campaign for Democratic candidates, with recent visits to Michigan, Minnesota and Florida. He was scheduled to attend campaign events in New Hampshire on Sunday, which are now likely to be affected by his hospitalisation.Murphy’s hospitalisation comes days after he made headlines for strongly criticising the Trump administration’s reported plans for a fresh military offensive against Iran. Speaking at an event organised by the Middle East Institute in Washington on Wednesday, he described the proposal as “insane”, warning that it could trigger a devastating escalation and potentially involve attacks on civilian infrastructure.Murphy, who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations and Appropriations committees, is also viewed as a potential contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.
