MP HC disposes of Muslim petitioners’ appeals after agreement with civic body

NEW DELHI: Madhya Pradesh high court on Monday disposed of two appeals related to the Shahi Masjid case after Muslim petitioners cited an agreement reached with the Ujjain civic body, news agency PTI reported.The court’s order came amid heightened tensions in Ujjain, where protesters clashed with police during demonstrations over development work in the city.Security was stepped up around the Shahi Masjid Complex after sporadic protests and stone-pelting were reported in the area. The clashes followed the demolition of a portion of the mosque as part of a road-widening project.

The road work is linked to preparations for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2028 in city of Hindu pilgrim, significant for Mahakaleshwar temple.Authorities are carrying out several infrastructure projects in Ujjain ahead of the religious gathering.Police used tear gas to disperse protesters after a large group clashed with security personnel at the site where a portion of the Shahi Masjid was to be demolished.
