‘Want peace for important deal’: Ex-employee, partner texted family from exec’s phone

NEW DELHI: “Our mother is waiting for me to bring back something – anything to remember Yuvraj by. His clothes, his watch… or now, even his ashes,” said Karishma Manchanda, the older sister of Yuvraj Singh Manchanda (31), a project manager at Adani Realty, who was killed allegedly by two of his former colleagues, his body dumped in a drain in Gurgaon.While his body was found by Haryana Police on Sept 10, the family didn’t find out till Sept 16. His body had been cremated by cops in the interim. Karishma said her family has still not been given his remains. She told TOIit was only when she went to the Badshahpur police station in Gurgaon on Sept 16 that she realised her brother’s body had been found six days ago and had already been cremated.According to Delhi Police, Yuvraj was murdered by Anya Vats and Sanyam Sachdeva, his former colleagues at a real estate firm, on Sept 6.

His family eventually learnt that he had died after Delhi Police apprehended Vats and Sachdeva from Uttarakhand, following which they confessed to their crime.The family alleged that Haryana Police did not follow protocol and didn’t upload Yuvraj’s photo on Zipnet — a portal used by police in different states to share information about missing or unknown dead persons.After they filed the missing complaint, the family and friends checked Zipnet every day for any information. Details of missing or unknown deceased persons are uploaded on Zipnet or CCTNS for family members to identify them. “Every hour of the day, we would check Zipnet. There was no update,” said Rajat Jain.Karishma and one of Yuvraj’s friends, Sahil, went to Badshahpur police station on Sept 16. “We saw Yuvraj’s picture. Police said he was found in a drain on Sept 10. We were shocked to hear that his body had been cremated by police on Sept 14,” Sahil said.Haryana Police, as per the info­r­mation on Zipnet, uploaded his de­tails only on Sept 16. They, however, said Zipnet was not the principal pan-India system being used for unidentified bodies and maintained the details were uploaded on CCTNS as part of the prescribed process on Sept 11. “Had the information been uploaded on Zipnet as soon as they found his body, at least we would have been able to perform his last rites and grieve,” Jain said.Karishma, meanwhile, also said she was made to wait for five hours when she went to Badshahpur poli­ce station for information about her dead brother’s belongings. After two days, the family is yet to receive anything — his ashes, clothes, a kada, his gold ring or even the postmortem report. Sahil said police told them that they had “given away” his clothes, as they were “stinking”.

Suspects sent his family texts

For two days after they saw him last on Sept 6, Karishma and her parents received messages from Yuvraj Singh Manchanda’s phone telling them he was working on an “important deal” and wanted “peace”. He refused to take their calls. A message on Sept 7 said he was flying to Bengaluru for work that day, along with a photo of a ticket. The last message came a day later, asking them not to disturb him and saying that he would call two days later.Only, Yuvraj had been killed on Sept 6. The promised call never came and Yuvraj’s family hit the panic button on Sept 11, filing a missing person complaint at Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar police station.According to Delhi Police, it was Vats and Sachdeva who kept sending messages to Yuvraj’s family members and friends to keep the ruse alive and prevent them from approaching the police.Karishma recalled that when she received his messages after Sept 6, she begged him to call, show his face or even send a voice note. “My younger sister got a message saying he would call her on Sept 10. When his phone was switched off on that day, we panicked and filed a missing persons complaint,” she said.A project manager at Adani Realty, Yuvraj was described by his friends as a passionate and dedicated employee. Hours before he disappeared, he had bought a sherwani from Lajpat Nagar for his wedding, which was scheduled for Oct.“Our mother is a heart patient and our father is paralysed. Yuvraj would come back by 10pm every day to take care of them. Now, we can only hope of getting his ashes home,” Karishma said.
