NEW DELHI: US ambassador to India Sergio Gor made a rare appearance at a Chinese event here on Wednesday, as White House rolled out a red carpet for President Xi Jinping for a potentially landmark visit.Gor joined Chinese ambassador Xu Feihong for a reception hosted by the latter at a 5-star hotel to celebrate the 77th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China. India’s commerce secretary, Rajesh Aggarwal, was the chief guest. Russian ambassador Denis Alipov was also present.

Unlike on such occasions in recent years, the anniversary saw a heavy presence of top Western diplomats, including the envoys of Germany, Canada and Netherlands.Xu reiterated Beijing’s position that India and China were partners, not rivals. The ambassador said that as two ancient civilisations, China and India had sufficient political and historical wisdom to handle differences properly.“We stay committed to striving for a dual-track approach to bilateral relations and border issues with each reinforcing the other and maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas so as to ensure bilateral relations advance on the right track,” said Xu, adding, “It would be mutually beneficial for us to strengthen friendly exchanges and win-win cooperation, enhance public support for our bilateral ties, and assist each other’s develo-pment and revitalisation.“
