TARN TARAN: A man who went to his wife’s parental home in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district to persuade her to return following a domestic dispute was allegedly doused with petrol and set on fire by his brother-in-law, police said.The victim, Lovepreet Singh, from Lopoke village in Amritsar district, died from severe burn injuries. His sister-in-law, Gurjit Kaur, who reportedly rushed to save him during the attack, also suffered critical burns and died a few days later.Police said the accused, identified as Sajan Singh, also sustained serious burn injuries after being caught in the flames. People at the scene rescued him.The incident took place on 13 June.Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Surendra Lamba on Saturday confirmed the incident.He said Lovepreet died soon after the attack, while Gurjit Kaur, who had sustained severe burn injuries, succumbed a few days earlier.According to police, the CCTV footage shows Lovepreet involved in a heated argument and physical scuffle with the accused. Moments later, a man is seen pouring a flammable liquid, believed to be petrol, over Lovepreet before allegedly setting him on fire with a lighter.The footage shows the fire spreading rapidly, with both Lovepreet and Gurjit Kaur running in panic after being engulfed in flames.The SSP said police had registered a murder case against the accused and taken him into custody.He added that the deceased’s wife, Sandeep Kaur, had also been arrested in connection with the case.Police said Lovepreet had gone to his wife’s parental home in Sangha village on 13 June to persuade her to return with him.The couple had been married for about nine months. According to police, Sandeep Kaur had returned to her parental home shortly after the marriage following a dispute and had been living there since.
