BENGALURU: JD(S) state general secretary Manjunath alias Gottigere Manjanna has been arrested in connection with the alleged assault of a traffic police constable while he was on duty at Gottigere on Sunday, police said.The incident occurred around 4pm near Hulimavu traffic police station when constable Arun was regulating traffic. According to the complaint, Arun stopped Manjanna’s vehicle with a hand signal to allow vehicles travelling in the opposite direction to pass.Manjanna allegedly objected to being stopped and questioned the constable. An argument followed, during which he allegedly grabbed Arun by the collar and attempted to assault him with the help of an aide.A video of the incident that has since gone viral purportedly shows Manjanna speaking to a senior police officer over the phone and allegedly attempting to kick the constable.According to police, Manjanna had called a senior officer after the altercation and complained about the constable stopping his vehicle. The constable was later allegedly made to apologise to Manjanna, a move that reportedly angered junior police personnel.The situation escalated before members of the public and Hulimavu traffic police intervened and separated the two.A senior traffic police officer said the incident came to the department’s notice after the constable had left for home. He was subsequently called back for an inquiry.Joint commissioner of police (East) Ramesh Banoth had earlier said that a case was registered at Hulimavu police station and that an investigation was under way.Police have registered the case under provisions relating to assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty, along with other applicable sections.Manjanna was arrested in connection with the case, police said.
