Jana Nayagan Box Office Collection Day 1 Live Update: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay’s last film Jana Nayagan finally hit theatres on July 23 to mixed reviews. At the box office, however, the movie got off to a promising start.
According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan grossed Rs 48.27 crore crore on Thursday. Overseas, the film collected Rs 30, taking the total worldwide collection to Rs 78.27 crore.

On Day 1, the film had an overall theatre occupancy of 68.31% in Tamil language – with morning shows at 73.85%, afternoon shows at 62.46%, evening shows at 63.62%, and night shows at 73.31%.
With a worldwide opening-day collection of Rs 78.27 crore, Jana Nayagan, reportedly made on a budget of over Rs 300 crore, has outperformed Vijay’s previous releases The Greatest of All Time and Leo, which earned Rs 51.39 crore and Rs 75.53 crore, respectively, on Day 1.
While the film has opened strongly at the box office, its critical reception has been divided. An excerpt from SCREEN’s review of Jana Nayagan read, “The first half broadly follows the Bhagavanth Kesari template. Vijay is introduced as a prisoner. An action sequence in a jail establishes his physical dominance. Then comes a lengthy introduction for Bobby Deol’s Phoenix, and this is where the film’s problems begin. Where the film works, and it does work in stretches, is where Vijay is allowed to be himself. There are a handful of elevation moments that land the way they are supposed to, where the background score swells, the crowd erupts, and for a few seconds, the film remembers what it is supposed to be.”
Besides Vijay, Jana Nayagan also features Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol and Pooja Hegde. It has been directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions.

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan is continuing its steady run at the box office on Day 2. As of 12 PM, the Vijay-starrer has collected an estimated Rs 2.29 crore net on Friday while running across 4,027 shows. With this, the film’s total India net collection has reached Rs 43.29 crore, while its India gross stands at Rs 50.97 crore.

Film tracker Amutha Bharathi claimed that Jana Nayagan sold an impressive 6.37 lakh tickets on BookMyShow in a single day, with a significant contribution from the film’s Telugu and Hindi versions. Praising Vijay’s star power, the post described him as a “record breaker,” adding that the feat is even more remarkable considering Jana Nayagan faced a six-month release delay and had also been leaked online before its theatrical release.
Jana Nayagan surpasses Leo in BookMyShow interest
Jana Nayagan created massive pre-release buzz on BookMyShow, recording 1.42 million interests ahead of its release. The Vijay-starrer secured the ninth spot on the platform’s all-time interest list, overtaking major titles such as Leo and Avatar: Fire and Ash. The film also came within touching distance of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which holds around 1.5 million interests. The strong BookMyShow interest reflected the immense anticipation surrounding Vijay’s farewell film and served as an early indicator of its impressive opening at the box office.

As shared by trade site Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan recorded a strong Day 1 performance on BookMyShow, selling 4,54,510 tickets between 6 AM and 10 PM, reflecting sustained audience demand throughout the day. While the Vijay-starrer remained behind the all-time single-day highs of Jailer (10 lakh tickets), Leo (7.56 lakh), and Coolie (7.15 lakh), it comfortably outperformed Karuppu, which had sold 2.38 lakh tickets. The film’s bookings gathered momentum quickly, crossing 1 lakh tickets by the morning, 2 lakh by 2 PM, and 3 lakh by 6 PM, before witnessing its biggest surge during the evening. The final hour between 9 PM and 10 PM emerged as the day’s peak, with 38,190 tickets sold. Adding to the momentum, the Hindi version, Jan Neta, also contributed more than 40,000 tickets during the late-night booking rush, underlining the strong nationwide interest in Vijay’s farewell film.

Jana Nayagan is enjoying a strong audience response, with the film simultaneously trending in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi on BookMyShow. The Tamil version has earned an impressive 9.2/10 rating from more than 17,900 votes, while the Telugu version, Jana Nayakudu, holds a solid 8.6/10. Backed by glowing ratings and a late-night booking pace of nearly 40,000 tickets per hour, the film appears well-positioned for a strong opening weekend.
Leo vs Jana Nayagan Day 1 Box Office
Jana Nayagan opened well at the box office but fell considerably short of Leo’s record-breaking Day 1 numbers. Leo had amassed a massive Rs 64.80 crore net and Rs 75.53 crore gross in India across 15,067 shows. Overseas, Leo was far ahead with Rs 66.50 crore gross, compared to Jana Nayagan’s Rs 30.00 crore. As a result, Leo registered a phenomenal Rs 142.03 crore worldwide gross on its opening day, whereas Jana Nayagan concluded Day 1 with Rs 78.27 crore worldwide gross.
