Anthropic’s $100 million bet on AI talent

Anthropic has launched Claude Frontier Academy, a $100 million programme that trains AI engineers the way hospitals train doctors. At its centre is a 12-week residency, where engineers lead a real Claude project at their own company under the watch of Anthropic’s team before they are certified. The company plans to put 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers (FDEs) through the programme by the end of 2027. Its first cohorts include engineers from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley, Novo Nordisk and Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Anthropic says people who can take AI from an idea to a working system inside a business have become the hardest talent to find, and it would rather build them than wait for the market to supply them.

Anthropic’s AI residency starts with a simulated deployment and a graded exam

The comparison to medicine is deliberate. Doctors learn from practising physicians, train on real cases and are assessed before they work alone. Anthropic has built its programme on the same three steps. It starts with a multi-day, in-person session led by Anthropic engineers and licensed instructors. Participants work through a simulated enterprise deployment, from picking the right use case to security review and handover. A graded practical on a new scenario closes this stage, and those who clear it earn the Claude Resident Engineer badge. The residency comes next. Over 12 weeks, each engineer leads a real Claude use case back at their organisation, supported by Anthropic engineers and learning alongside their cohort. A final assessment decides who earns the Claude Frontier Deployed Engineer badge. The first are expected in early 2027.

Only nominated engineers get a seat at Claude Frontier Academy

Seats aren’t open to all. Companies nominate their strongest hands-on software engineers, and each arrives with a named Claude project to lead. Anthropic is looking for a record of building with large language models and helping others adopt AI. Prior experience building AI agents, though, isn’t required. Cohorts are currently running in San Francisco, New York and London.“Claude Frontier Academy trains people the way our own engineers learn,” said Steve Corfield, Anthropic’s global head of business development and partnerships. The FDE title is a twist on forward-deployed engineers, a role Palantir popularised by placing engineers inside client organisations. Draup data shows FDE openings at five major consulting firms rose to 1,404 in the year ended May, even as overall job postings across seven firms fell about 24%.The Academy builds on the Claude Partner Network, where professionals at 46,000 firms already hold more than 175,000 Claude certifications. Anthropic calls the 10,000-engineer target the first step of many.
