Rahul Gandhi dual citizenship case: HC orders FIR against Cong MP; petitioner hails ‘landmark’ judgment

NEW DELHI: The Allahabad high court on Friday ordered that a First Information Report (FIR) be registered against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who, according to the petitioner, also holds British citizenship.The Lucknow bench of the high court directed the Kotwali police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli district to register FIR against Gandhi, who is both Rae Bareli’s Lok Sabha MP and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha. The order came while allowing a petition seeking legal action in the matter.The petition was filed by S Vignesh Shishir, a BJP worker from Karnataka, who challenged a January 28 order of the Special MP/MLA Court in Lucknow that had dismissed his plea for an FIR against Gandhi. Shishir claimed to possess documents and “confidential emails” from the UK government indicating that Gandhi is also a British national.In a post on X, Shishir thanked the high court and described the judgment as “landmark” and “historic.”“I will always be ever indebted till my last breath to the hon’ble court for bringing out the truth in the interest of national security and larger public interest,” he wrote.The BJP worker added that the Uttar Pradesh government has urged the HC to allow it to transfer the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).Shishir also requested the Centre to upgrade his Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) security cover to the highest possible level across India with immediate effect.The Constitution of India does not permit dual citizenship.
