The Rajasthan government has issued an order making daily newspaper reading for at least 10 minutes mandatory in all government schools across the state. The initiative aims to improve students’ general knowledge, reading habits, and awareness of current affairs from an early age.

According to the directive, students will spend a fixed 10-minute period each school day reading newspapers as part of the regular school routine. Teachers will guide students in understanding important news items and encourage discussions to help them develop critical thinking and communication skills.

Education officials said the move is intended to strengthen language proficiency, boost comprehension skills, and keep students informed about social, national, and global developments. The programme is also expected to cultivate a habit of regular reading and reduce students’ dependence on rote learning methods.

The order applies to all government-run schools in Rajasthan and is set to be implemented immediately. School authorities have been instructed to ensure proper execution of the programme and to integrate it smoothly into the daily timetable without disrupting academic activities.

Education experts have welcomed the decision, stating that newspaper reading can play a key role in shaping informed, confident, and socially aware students.
