Trapped for 12 hours after bike falls into mud-filled pit, UP man dies

KANPUR: In a grim reminder of the Greater Noida tragedy, a 25-year-old man remained trapped for nearly 12 hours after his motorcycle fell into a mud-filled pit on a deserted road in Kanpur Dehat, 45 km from the city, and died later while being treated at a local hospital on Wednesday. The tragedy took place on Rura Shivli Road near Kadri village in the Shivli police station area in Kanpur Dehat on Tuesday night. Police said the victim, Dhirendra Kumar, a private guard at Panki Power House, was returning home at around 6 pm when his motorcycle lost balance and fell into a roadside pit full of mud.Police said as it was dark and because of the depth of the pit he was not noticed by any passer-by. As the road is frequented by very few people post sundown, his cries for help may have gone unnoticed, they said. Dhirendra remained trapped in the mud overnight in the cold and smeared in mud when he was noticed by some farmers around 6 am on Wednesday. Local village head Ankush Kumar and Vijay Kumar, along with other villagers and passers-by, helped him out of the pit. His body was stiff from the cold and covered in mud. Villagers lit a fire to warm him, cleaned his face, and called a 102 ambulance to take him to a Shivli hospital. However, Dhirendra passed away during treatmentDhirendra’s brother, Brijendra Kumar, said the family was worried when he did not return home all night, and they received the devastating news in the morning.Shivli police station in-charge Praveen Yadav said that the dark road and the pit’s depth made him invisible and he couldn’t be rescued. On Jan 17, software engineer Yuvraj Mehta died after his SUV fell into a pit dug for construction, which was full of water, in Greater Noida’s Sector 150.
