The makers of Coolie faced a setback on Thursday as the Madras High Court rejected their appeal against the CBFC’s ‘A’ certification for the film, which prohibits viewers under 18 years of age from watching it in theatres.

Justice TV Thamilselvi rejected the appeal filed by the production house Sun Pictures under Section 5 of the Cinematograph Act, 1957. While the CBFC justified the ‘A’ certificate by citing violent action scenes, the producer countered that such sequences are a staple of Tamil films and cannot be avoided. The company noted that the CBFC granted an ‘A’ certificate even after it complied with the board’s directives, including removing obscene words and masking liquor consumption scenes.

As per The Hindu report, the censor board responded with its position on the matter by saying, “Section 58(2) of the Cinematograph Act authorizes the Centre to issue such directions, as it may deem fit, setting out the principles which shall guide the CBFC in issuing an appropriate certificate to films intended for public exhibition.”
