INC Foundation Day: Indian National Congress Completes 140 Years

Mumbai, December 28, 2025:
Today marks the 140th Foundation Day of the Indian National Congress (INC), one of the oldest political organisations in India and a central pillar of the country’s freedom struggle.

The INC was founded on 28 December 1885 in Bombay (now Mumbai) with the objective of creating a unified platform for Indians to voice their concerns against British colonial rule. Over the decades, the party evolved into the main force that led India’s movement for independence.

Role in Freedom Struggle

From demanding civil rights under British rule to leading mass movements such as the Non-Cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement, and Quit India Movement, the Congress played a decisive role in shaping India’s destiny.

Several legendary leaders emerged from the party, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Subhas Chandra Bose, Dadabhai Naoroji, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and many others who inspired millions to fight for freedom.

Journey After Independence

After India attained independence in 1947, the INC became the dominant political force in the country, forming governments at the Centre and in several states. It contributed significantly to nation-building in areas such as democracy, social justice, education, industrialisation, and foreign policy.

Today’s Significance

On its 140th anniversary, leaders and supporters across the nation are remembering the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and reflecting on the party’s historic mission to protect India’s unity, democracy, and constitutional values.

The day serves as a reminder of the long journey from colonial rule to a sovereign democratic republic — a journey in which the Indian National Congress played a defining role.
