A leader of the Swechchhasebak Dal, the volunteer wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was shot dead in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar area on Tuesday night, while another man was injured, according to police and local reports.The victim, Azizur Rahman Musabbir, was a former general secretary of Dhaka City North Swechchhasebak Dal. The shooting took place on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue near the Star Hotel in Karwan Bazar at around 8.40 pm, The Daily Star reported.Fazlul Karim, additional deputy commissioner of the Tejgaon Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the incident and said miscreants opened fire on Musabbir and another man identified as Sufian Byapari Masud.Musabbir was rushed to BRB Hospital in Panthapath, where doctors declared him dead, the police official said. Masud was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and is currently receiving treatment in the emergency department.Mohammad Javed, who brought Masud to the hospital, said Masud is the general secretary of the Tejgaon thana Van Workers’ Union and a resident of Keraniganj.Following the shooting, around 200 BNP leaders and activists gathered at the Karwan Bazar intersection and staged a protest, according to a correspondent at the scene.
