China will assume the rotating Brics presidency in 2027 and host the 19th Brics Summit.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended his best wishes to China, which will host the next Brics summit in 2027, saying the world now expects “concrete results” as the grouping entered its third decade.Addressing the open session on the second and final day of the Brics Summit in New Delhi, PM Modi said, “Brics is poised to enter its third decade. The world now expects concrete results from us, not just ideas and commitments. I am confident that through our collective efforts, we will certainly live up to these expectations.”The Prime Minister also thanked the leaders and their teams for making the New Delhi Summit a success and wished China well as the next host of the grouping.“I extend my best wishes once again to China as the next host of Brics. I especially commend all of you and your teams for making the New Delhi Summit a success. I wish you all a pleasant and safe journey,” he said, according to ANI.PM highlights Global South’s growing trustSpeaking at a session on “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth,” PM Modi said the trust of Global South nations in Brics had grown.He highlighted the grouping’s initiatives on disaster management, cooperation among micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and environmental protection.“India has advanced the spirit of friendship, partnership, and cooperation through the Brics platform,” PM Modi said.“We have endeavoured to ensure that Brics cooperation is not limited to governments alone; we want our entrepreneurs, farmers, researchers, women, youth, and ordinary citizens to become active participants as well,” he added.“I can say from personal experience that the trust of Global South nations in Brics has grown, because their voices are heard, their experiences are respected, and solutions are crafted not just for them, but with them. The strength of Brics lies in our diversity and cooperation. We may be rooted in different realities, but together we rise through cooperation and blossom for humanity. May our diversity remain our identity, our cooperation serve as our inspiration, and our progress benefit all of humanity,” he noted.Xi calls for stronger Brics roleChinese President Xi Jinping called for a stronger role for Brics in advancing the interests of the Global South, urging the grouping to “seize the historical initiative” and become an “active, stabilising and positive force in international affairs”.Addressing the second session of the 18th Brics Summit, Xi thanked PM Modi and the Indian government for hosting the two-day summit.According to an official statement released by China’s ministry of foreign affairs, Xi said the Global South had emerged as a “key driver of world multipolarity” and urged Brics countries to work together to advance its interests.“To bring stability to the world and make it a better place, Brics countries must seize the historical initiative, rally the Global South, be an active, stabilizing and positive force in international affairs, and advance the well-being of all humanity,” Xi said.Xi called for greater participation of developing countries in global decision-making and stressed the importance of multilateralism.“All countries, regardless of their size, strength or wealth, are equal members of the international community,” he said, urging Global South countries to “hold high the banner of multilateralism” and uphold the authority and role of the United Nations.He also backed reforms to the international financial architecture to increase the “representation and voice of developing countries”. Xi called for greater cooperation through the New Development Bank.On development, Xi said Global South countries should remain committed to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. “To achieve great things, one should always put the people first,” he added.China proposes five initiativesXi outlined five initiatives to deepen Brics cooperation in artificial intelligence, trade and investment, digital industries, intelligent manufacturing, and science and technology talent development.Under the AI initiative, China proposed establishing a Brics AI open-source community, supporting cooperation in developing and applying large language models, and organising specialised AI seminars and training courses.“First, the open source and inclusive AI initiative. China will be a pioneer in establishing a Brics AI open source community, support cooperation in developing and applying large language models, hold specialized AI seminars and training courses, and build an open ecosystem for AI,” Xi said.On trade and investment, China proposed a Brics special economic zone partnership and announced plans to hold the Brics Forum on Trade in Services next year.“Second, the trade and investment facilitation initiative. China proposes to establish a Brics special economic zone partnership, under which countries can set up an intelligent portal, coordinate policies, and build a new frontier for open development. In an effort to cultivate new drivers of economic and trade cooperation, China will hold the Brics Forum on Trade in Services next year. We welcome your active participation,” he added.China also proposed a Brics digital ecosystem cloud platform and cooperation in digital skills, technology exchange and industrial development.“Third, the digital industry cooperation initiative. China will push for establishing a Brics digital ecosystem cloud platform, and conduct digital skills training, technological exchange and industrial alignment, so as to jointly enable the development of the digital economy,” Xi said.Under the intelligent manufacturing initiative, China offered to assist fellow Brics countries in building smart factories and developing common standards.“Fourth, the intelligent manufacturing cooperation initiative. China stands ready to assist fellow Brics countries in building smart factories and developing standards and norms, and jointly promote manufacturing transformation and upgrading,” he said.Xi also proposed a Brics engineer cultivation alliance and a youth exchange programme for scientific and technological innovation.“Fifth, the science and technology talent development initiative. China proposes to set up a Brics engineer cultivation alliance for joint development of engineers and mutual recognition of competency standards. China will launch a Brics youth exchange program for scientific and technological innovation, so as to cultivate more high-caliber talent,” he said.Xi called for a people-centred approach to emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, and backed the creation of a global AI governance framework based on consensus.He also urged stronger cooperation on climate change and called for the “full and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement”.As India concluded its 2026 Brics chairship, Xi said China would continue to promote high-quality development, high-standard opening up and cooperation with other countries. Xi later departed New Delhi after attending the two-day summit.PM Modi shares summit photographsPM Modi also shared a series of posts and photographs from the summit on X. “Brics Summit related interactions continue at Bharat Mandapam,” he said in one post, sharing photographs with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.He also posted a photograph of Brics leaders at the summit’s family photo event.“With leaders of Brics Member and Partner Countries, Outreach Invitees and Heads of International Organisations together at Brics Summit in New Delhi. A powerful reflection of the growing strength and global resonance of the Brics family. We are connected by a shared vision of cooperation, furthering the spirit of partnership and progress,” he wrote.
