The US Open produced an unusual storyline even before Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro walked onto Arthur Ashe Stadium. This was not just an all-American quarter-final between two of the country’s leading tennis players. It was a meeting between two women whose families have amassed fortunes running into billions of dollars, turning their US Open clash into what fans quickly dubbed the “Battle of the Billionaires.”When the numbers were put together, the combined estimated wealth of the Pegula and Navarro families was reported at around $15 billion. And while the money had nothing to do with what happened once the match began, it certainly added a fascinating subplot to one of the biggest matches of the US Open.
Pegula wins the ‘Battle of the Billionaires’
The sporting contest ultimately belonged to Pegula. The third-seeded American recovered from losing the opening set to beat 26th seed Navarro 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, booking her place in the US Open semi-finals for the third consecutive year. She will face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the last four. For Navarro, it was another impressive run in New York after she reached the semi-finals at the 2024 US Open.
The Pegula family fortune
Jessica Pegula is the daughter of Terry Pegula, the billionaire businessman who owns the NFL‘s Buffalo Bills and NHL’s Buffalo Sabres. Forbes’ current estimate cited in reports puts Terry Pegula’s fortune at around $11.8 billion. His wealth was originally built in the energy sector before he made major investments in professional sports.Jessica, however, has carved out her own identity in professional tennis. The 32-year-old is a former US Open finalist, has won multiple WTA titles and has established herself as one of the most consistent players on the women’s tour. She entered this year’s tournament as the No. 3 seed and was already a two-time US Open semi-finalist before beating Navarro.
The Navarro family fortune
Across the net was Emma Navarro, daughter of businessman Ben Navarro, founder of Sherman Financial Group. Ben Navarro’s fortune has been estimated at around $3.2 billion. His business interests extend beyond finance and into tennis itself, with the family investing heavily in the sport, including ownership of major tournaments such as the Cincinnati Open and Charleston Open.Emma has also established herself as a serious force on court. She reached the US Open semi-finals in 2024, climbed as high as No. 8 in the world and returned to the quarter-finals in New York this year after an impressive run through the draw.
$15 billion vs tennis’ big three
The eye-catching comparison that caught social media’s attention was the claim by the fans that the two families’ combined wealth, around $15 billion, dwarfs the estimated combined fortunes of tennis legends Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. That comparison needs a little context. The Pegula and Navarro figures refer largely to family wealth, principally that of their billionaire fathers. The Djokovic, Federer and Nadal figures generally refer to the players’ own accumulated wealth from prize money, endorsements, investments and businesses. So it is not a like-for-like financial comparison.

Federer became tennis’ first billionaire according to Forbes, although his fortune later slipped below $1 billion following a fall in the value of his stake in sportswear company On.Nadal, meanwhile, earned more than $550 million in career pretax earnings from prize money, endorsements and other business ventures, according to Forbes, while Djokovic has earned a record $195 million in ATP prize money alone.Still, the sheer size of the number made the quarter-final an irresistible talking point online.
