US President Donald Trump on Saturday took a swipe at the ongoing funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran, saying America gave Iran “a week off” because they are “nice.”Addressing a gathering at Mount Rushmore on the 250th anniversary of US independence, Trump said Washington “knocked the hell out of Iran” and that the country was “dying to settle.““We knocked the hell out of Iran. They’re dying to settle. We gave them a week off for a funeral because we’re nice,” Trump said.This comes as funeral rites for Khamenei began at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla. Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli strikes on February 28 this year.Khamenei’s body was to be on display at the Grand Mosalla in Tehran, Iran’s capital. Early Saturday, mourners wearing black walked through the streets of Tehran, emptied of vehicle traffic, trying to reach the Grand Mosalla.Iran’s government expects to see millions flood the streets of the capital in scenes reminiscent of the burial of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989.Khamenei’s body will be transported to cities in both Iran and neighbouring Iraq. Authorities have shut down streets, airspace and daily life in Tehran for the mourning.
