NEW DELHI: Heavy rain lashed parts of Delhi-NCR, bringing relief from the heat as temperatures dropped on Saturday afternoon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for light rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, two degrees below normal and 0.7 degrees lower than the previous day.The minimum temperature at Safdarjung was 25.3 degrees Celsius on Friday and 28.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The drop follows very light to light rainfall in parts of the city over the past two days.Other weather stations also reported lower minimum temperatures. Palam recorded 21.5 degrees Celsius, down 2.6 degrees from Friday. Lodhi Road recorded 23.2 degrees Celsius, 2.4 degrees lower than the previous day, while Ridge and Ayanagar recorded 22.3 degrees Celsius and 22.6 degrees Celsius respectively.According to the IMD, Ayanagar received 11.2 mm of rainfall between 11.30 pm on Friday and 2.30 am on Saturday. No other weather station recorded rainfall during the same period.A similar yellow alert has also been issued for Sunday, with weather conditions expected to remain unchanged.The IMD said the maximum temperature is likely to fall further and remain between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius on Saturday.Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality improved to the satisfactory category on Saturday morning. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 82 at 9 am, compared with the 24-hour average AQI of 123, recorded at 4 pm on Friday.The Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) has forecast the AQI to remain in the moderate category over the next few days.
