Google has recently announced new artificial intelligence (AI) tools for the US Department of War. This comes just a day after AI company Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, since it was designated as a supply chain risk. The move expands the tech major’s role in the Pentagon’s AI infrastructure and introduces new capabilities for military and civilian personnel to build custom AI agents. The company said its Gemini AI models will power a new feature on GenAI.mil, the Pentagon’s enterprise AI portal, allowing members of the War Department’s workforce of more than 3 million people to create digital assistants for administrative tasks.

The tool, called Agent Designer, allows users to build AI agents using no-code or low-code workflows for work such as drafting meeting notes, creating action items and breaking projects into step-by-step plans. Google said the AI agents will initially operate on unclassified networks, though discussions are already underway about expanding their use to classified and top-secret systems. Recently, Emil Michael, the War Department’s technology chief, told Bloomberg that he has “high confidence” that Google will be a “great partner on all networks,” adding that the Pentagon was “moving on” from its dispute with Anthropic.Anthropic sued the government after it was formally blacklisted and designated a supply chain risk, a classification historically used for foreign adversaries. In its legal complaint, the company said the government’s actions are “unprecedented and unlawful” and claimed they are “harming Anthropic irreparably.”The Pentagon removed Anthropic from its systems for refusing to allow the usage of its technology for autonomous weapons or domestic surveillance. Until recently, the company was the only AI provider operating in the Pentagon’s classified cloud. The War Department has since added OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI to restricted networks while expanding cooperation with Google.

In its blog post, Google wrote: “In December 2025, Google Public Sector was proud to be the first technology provider to offer an enterprise AI tool, Gemini for Government, through GenAI.mil to more than three million civilian and military personnel for unclassified work. Today we are introducing a new feature within Gemini for Government on GenAI.mil, Agent Designer. Now with Agent Designer, DoW civilian and military personnel can build their own agents to support unclassified work tasks.Introducing Agent DesignerAgent Designer is a no-/low-code platform that allows GenAI.mil users to easily build AI agents using natural language. Users can design digital assistants to automate repetitive, multi-step administrative tasks—no programming skills required. This allows users to train and build agents to increase efficiency and reduce repetitive tasks, based on their unique needs.Examples of how these agents can transform workflows include:Draft creation: Agents can help draft meeting read-aheads, action items from team calls, or employee award submissions.Project planning: Agents can break down large, complex goals into a step-by-step checklist of tasks and timelines to help teams stay organized and achieve deadlines.A milestone for personnel productivityIn just over one month, GenAI.mil surpassed one million unique users—a signal that personnel are eager to embrace more efficient ways of working. To support this growth, Google Public Sector hosts regular training sessions and office hours in collaboration with the U.S. Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), helping users adopt this technology with confidence. With five out of six military branches designating GenAI.mil as their go-to enterprise AI platform for productivity, personnel are now able to collaborate securely and tackle administrative tasks, freeing up time.Efficiency in actionThe real story isn’t just the technology—it’s how users are reclaiming their time. Here are just a few ways DoW personnel are currently leveraging Gemini for Government:Accelerating document creation: Teams are using AI to complete first drafts of acquisition frameworks and white papers.Streamlining document reviews: Personnel are processing data-heavy documentation to quickly summarise key findings.Improving daily workflows: From preparing leadership briefing materials to generating research, Gemini for Government is helping staff work more effectively across the Department.”
