Dario Amodei, CEO, AnthropicIndia has an “absolutely central role” to play in shaping both the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on Thursday, highlighting the country’s influence in the global AI ecosystem, EconomicTimes reported.
Speaking at the AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam, Amodei said India, as the world’s largest democracy, can help address the economic, societal and security challenges posed by advanced AI systems. He noted that technologies pioneered in India have historically set standards across the Global South and helped diffuse humanitarian and technological benefits more widely.
“India has an absolutely central role to play in these questions and challenges, both on the side of the opportunities and on the side of the risks,” he said.
En route to surpassing human intelligence
Describing the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, Amodei compared its progress to a “Moore’s Law for intelligence” and said AI systems are approaching a stage where they could outperform most humans across a wide range of tasks.
“We’re increasingly close to what I’ve called a country of geniuses in a data centre — a set of AI agents more capable than most humans at most things, and can coordinate at superhuman speed. That level of capability is something the world has never seen before, and brings a very wide range of both opportunities and concerns for humanity,” Amodei added.
While such capabilities could help cure long-incurable diseases, improve health outcomes and lift billions, including in the Global South, out of poverty, he cautioned about risks such as autonomous AI behaviour, potential misuse by individuals or governments, and economic displacement.
Signalling its commitment to India, Anthropic this week opened an office in Bengaluru and appointed Irina Ghose as Managing Director for India. The company has also announced partnerships with major Indian enterprises, including Infosys, to deploy its AI models across sectors such as digital infrastructure and enterprise transformation.
Amodei said Anthropic is collaborating with Indian non-profits including EkStep Foundation, Pratham and Central Square Foundation to explore applications in education, agriculture and health. The company is also working with global institutions to evaluate its Claude model across India’s regional languages and locally relevant tasks.
He added that Anthropic is keen to work with India on safety testing and economic research under the New Delhi Frontier AI commitments, and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for convening the summit, saying the “energy and ambition” in India’s technology ecosystem was “palpable, unlike anywhere else”.
