Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid glowing tribute to Velu Nachiyar, hailing her as one of India’s most courageous women warriors and an inspiring symbol of resistance against colonial rule.
In his message, the Prime Minister described Velu Nachiyar as a fearless leader who stood up to British forces in the 18th century, long before India’s larger freedom movement took shape. He highlighted her bravery, strategic leadership, and determination in defending her kingdom and safeguarding the dignity of her people.
Velu Nachiyar, the queen of Sivagangai, is widely regarded as one of the earliest Indian rulers to wage an armed struggle against British colonial expansion. She is also remembered for building strong alliances and empowering women in warfare, making her a pioneering figure in Indian history.
The Prime Minister said her life and legacy continue to inspire generations, particularly women, to stand up for justice, self-respect, and national pride. He stressed the importance of remembering and celebrating unsung heroes like Velu Nachiyar, whose contributions played a vital role in shaping India’s resistance to colonial domination.
Historians and cultural scholars have welcomed the tribute, noting that such recognition helps bring greater national and global attention to India’s early freedom fighters and their sacrifices.
