Renowned Tamil actor Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s marriage to entrepreneur Nicholai Sachdev last year was notable not only for the elegance of the event but also for highlighting the unwavering bond she shares with her family. Not just her mother, Chaya, and sister, Pooja, but also her stepmother, actor Radikaa, and stepsister, Rayane R Mithun, were at the forefront of all the ceremonies, showering love on Varalaxmi. However, the actor recently revealed that they did not reach this point overnight and that she initially harboured hard feelings towards Radikaa, assuming she had caused the separation of her father, actor Sarathkumar, and mother, Chaya.
During a recent appearance on Rayane’s podcast, Varalaxmi went unfiltered and opened up about the emotional turmoil her parents’ divorce had on her. Mentioning that she “forgave” Sarathkumar long ago, Varalaxmi revealed that therapy played a significant role in helping her overcome her resentment towards him. “Sometimes, two people just don’t work together. For me, dad is dad. He’s my biological father, and I have to respect him; then there was childhood love. Then there was anger due to Mum and him separating. There was some more anger when he remarried. But eventually, it settled down. I think they both, for themselves, made a better decision because I think they are happier people because of those decisions,” the actor said, Hindustan Times reported.

Mentioning that she initially blamed Radikaa for her parents’ split, Varalaxmi said that the hard feelings eventually faded after she realised that Radikaa had no role in it. The actor also noted that Sarathkumar and Chaya’s marriage was plagued by problems even before Radikaa entered her father’s life as a romantic companion. “You are tuned to think, ‘Oh, she came and broke their marriage.’ She’s not the reason that my parents broke up. People ask, ‘How can you be so affectionate towards them?’ Because she’s not the reason they broke up. The marriage was already having problems when Aunty (Radikaa) entered,” she told Rayane.
Varalaxmi added, “Initially, Aunty and I were not on the greatest of terms. Because I blamed her for my parents’ separation. But as you grow up, you realise everyone is allowed to have their own choices. Now, I share a lovely relationship with Aunty, and she shares a lovely relationship with my mum as well.”
Sarathkumar and Chaya reportedly married in 1984 and parted ways in 2000 while being parents to Varalaxmi and Pooja. He subsequently tied the knot with Radikaa, who had already been through two divorces and had a daughter, Rayane, from her second marriage. Sarathkumar and Radikaa eventually married in 2001 and have a son, Rahhul, together.
