Thalapathy Vijay’s swansong before his full-time political entry — Jana Nayagan — is already turning out to be a blockbuster. The film, which is set to release on January 9 to coincide with the Pongal festivities, has taken a strong start at the worldwide box office. The film has witnessed massive traction from audiences across the globe, minting crores through advance ticket sales overseas, while India has also contributed significantly to the pre-release numbers.
According to Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan has already raked in Rs 35 crore in worldwide pre-sales so far. Of the Rs 35 crore, India has contributed close to Rs 7 crore in advance sales, with Karnataka alone accounting for Rs 4 crore. However, the major chunk of the collections has come from overseas markets, where the film’s advance sales have crossed the Rs 25 crore mark.
It is worth noting that advance booking has not yet fully opened in Tamil Nadu, Vijay’s home state. Despite this, the film is registering impressive numbers in advance sales. From the limited number of shows currently available in Tamil Nadu, the film has already grossed nearly Rs 1 crore through advance bookings.
In Malaysia, where the makers recently organised a massive audio launch of the film, Jana Nayagan sold 50,000 tickets within just two hours, making it the fastest ticket sale ever for an Indian film in the country. The film has also sold more than 50,000 tickets in the UK.

In Karnataka, ticket prices for the film have soared up to Rs 2,000. In Bengaluru, theatres like Mukunda have already sold out early morning 6:30 am shows, with ticket prices ranging between Rs 1,800 and Rs 2,000. Other theatres in the city are offering early morning shows priced between Rs 800 and Rs 1,500, with most of these shows already sold out.
Jana Nayagan also stars Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, and Bobby Deol. The makers recently unveiled the film’s trailer, which shows Vijay essaying the role of a fearless police officer. Following its release, the trailer has drawn comparisons to the 2023 Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari, which starred Balakrishna in the lead role.
