New York City’s iconic Times Square Ball Drop is getting unprecedented upgrades for New Year’s Eve 2025–2026 — not just to ring in the new year, but to launch year-long festivities for America’s 250th birthday in 2026.

🎆 A Patriotic New Year’s Eve Celebration
For Timess Square’s New Year’s Eve on Dec. 31, 2025, the world-famous crystal ball will sparkle in red, white, and blue, marking the start of the Semiquincentennial — the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This special lighting and theme are designed to symbolize national pride and the beginning of year-long celebrations across the country.
The ball itself, which traditionally drops at the stroke of midnight to signal the start of the new year, will be part of an enhanced program:
- After the midnight drop, the ball will rise again and be relit in patriotic colors to officially welcome 2026 as the Semiquincentennial year.
- Around 12:04 a.m., a second celebratory flourish will take place featuring a release of up to 2,000 pounds of red, white, and blue confetti — a first-ever post-midnight confetti moment at Times Square.
- The festivities will also include a dynamic pyrotechnic finale set to a rendition of “America the Beautiful.”
This expanded sequence of events transforms the New Year’s Eve celebration into a dual-moment spectacle — blending the traditional countdown with a patriotic kickoff to a historic anniversary year.
🇺🇸 A Second Ball Drop — First in History
In addition to the December celebration, organizers have announced that the iconic Times Square Ball will drop a second time on July 3, 2026 — the eve of Independence Day, marking a historic first outside of the New Year’s Eve tradition. This special summer event anchors Fourth of July celebrations and reinforces New York City’s role in the nation’s semiquincentennial commemoration.
This July ball drop, also in a patriotic theme, is part of a broader partnership among America250, One Times Square, and the Times Square Alliance — organizations leading the national celebration and ensuring that the Semiquincentennial is recognized with signature moments on the global stage.

📅 Year-Long Commemoration and Community Initiatives
The New Year’s Eve moment is intended to launch a year of nationwide programming around the 250th anniversary. Activities planned through 2026 include community service initiatives, educational contests, fireworks displays, national volunteer efforts under the “America Gives” campaign, and celebratory events across states and cities.
According to America250 leadership, the goal is to engage all 350 million Americans in celebrating the nation’s heritage and future, using both the seasonal tradition of Times Square and year-round local celebrations to unify commemorations across the country.
